Information on Voting
The three ways to vote in South Dakota:
Absentee Voting--You must obtain an absentee voter application form--you can print that form from this link AbsenteeApplication_202012.PDF (sdsos.gov). Complete the form and take it to your county auditor before 5:00 PM of the day before the election. The county auditor will give you an absentee ballot. The ballot must be filled out and notarized. Once completed it must be delivered to the location of your polling place before the end of voting on election day AbsenteeVotingProcessSchoolCity.pdf (sdsos.gov). Absentee ballots are available starting on April 22 and ending on June 6 at 5 PM for the primaries. They are available starting on Sept. 23 and ending on Nov. 7 at 5 PM for the general election.
Early Voting--South Dakota doesn’t technically offer early in-person voting. However, you can go to your county auditor's office (see addresses below) once absentee voting begins and complete an absentee ballot in person. For the primary in-person absentee voting starts on April 22 and ends on June 6 at 5 PM For the General election it starts on Sept. 23 and ends on Nov. 7 at 5 PM.
Voting at Polling Places--Voting at Precinct Polling Places occurs on election days--Primary/June 7, 2022 and General/Nov 8, 2022. A map of District 12 is shown below. The best way to identify the address of your polling place is to visit the Secretary of State's website and enter your information in the Voter Portal. It will then return to you the location of your polling place. The link to the webpage that does this is: Voter Registration Name Search (sdsos.gov).
Requirements for Voting:
In order to vote in South Dakota you must be registered at least 15 days prior to the election that you wish to vote in. Below I have pasted information, from the Secretary of State's website, giving important dates for voting. Note that you need to update your registration if you have changed your name or address since you last registered. Also, in order to vote in the Republican primary, you need to indicate that your party preference is Republican when registering. Registration, updating your name/address or changing your party preference all require that you complete the same form. You can download that form from the Secretary of State's website. The link for doing that is here: (VoterRegistrationForm2019Protected.docx (live.com)). I'm asking supporters to vote for me in both the Primary (June 7th) and General (November 8th) elections. If you are not registered or your registration is no longer accurate, then please update your registration. Note that you'll need to show a photo ID for early voting and voting at a polling place. For absentee voting the ballot must be notarized.
